Glassolutions' advanced approach changes the face of One St Paul's Churchyard

Glassolutions’ latest generation of advanced multi-functional glazing has delivered the optimum balance of thermal, solar and acoustic control for two high-end refurbishment projects in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral.

The stunning One St Paul’s Churchyard re-fenestration and facelift projects at the heart of the capital’s business district comprises extensive office space and 23 guest rooms from the five-star Grange St Paul's Hotel.

Partnering with External Envelope Contractor Euro Windows, Glassolutions designed a glass specification featuring the new SGG Cool-Lite Xtreme 60/28 to compliment the bespoke window system being used and to achieve the demanding requirements of the clients, The Co-operative Insurance and Grange Hotels. Over 600m2 of double glazed units were crafted for the new complex, which takes on a neutral aesthetic appearance to complement its famous neighbour – St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Given its bustling prestigious setting, the need to provide adequate noise insulation for both the users of the offices and the residents of the hotel was paramount to the specification. Sales Executive for Glassolutions, Ian Snow, said: “St. Paul’s Cathedral attracts up to 5,000 visitors per day, making this a very busy location. That makes acoustic control inside the building crucial, so for this application the asymmetry and thicknesses of the inner and outer glasses, combined with a SGG Stadip laminated inner glass, ensured that the noise insulation requirements of both the offices and the hotel within One St Paul’s Churchyard were met.”

Ian explains; it was the introduction of a revolutionary new coating that made this job so unique: “This was the first time that we had the opportunity to apply the recently launched SGG Cool-Lite Xtreme 60/28 glass product on such a large scale. It enables the occupants of the building to receive 60% of the sun’s natural light, while reducing the heat gain to less than 30%. Coupled with a 1.0 W/m2k U-value, the glass ensures the best possible thermal efficiency for a double glazed unit.”

Euro Windows’ Joe Thompson, who managed the project, said: “The replacement window projects at One St. Paul’s Churchyard offered numerous challenges; from meeting stringent planning requirements to working with numerous contractors to complete a time-critical installation in one of the busiest parts of London.”

“One of the most vital challenges we faced was sourcing a glazing proposal that satisfied the solar control and sound attenuating requirements whilst still providing the thermal and safety performance required to comply with building regulations.

“Working closely with Glassolutions, we were able to propose a solution incorporating the newly available SGG Cool-Lite Xtreme which was approved by the client and contributed greatly to the scheme’s successful delivery.”

SGG Cool-Lite Xtreme 60/28 is part of the wide range of advanced solar control glazing solutions for commercial buildings and facades developed by Glassolutions enabling the management of solar radiation combined with exceptionally high thermal insulation and superb aesthetics in the most challenging locations.
